Kingfisher – Pagudpud
Possibly the most wind-reliable spot in Asia: from early October to the end of March the winter monsoon, funnelled through the strait between Taiwan and Luzon, blows 20–30 knots side-shore from the right on 25–28 days a month. A 500 m wide flat-water area runs 300 m out to the reef, knee to hip-deep in October, nearly dry two hours either side of low tide from November to January, when riders move to the windmill spot, and fuller again in February and March; the bottom is sand with grassy patches and the odd sea urchin. The strong wind roughens the surface, and beyond the reef the wave spot, nicknamed the new Hawaii, has clean, high waves compared to Ho'okipa; suits everyone from first-timers to wave riders, with cool, showery weather in November and December and January the coldest month.
