Marahau – Abel Tasman

The gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park an hour from Nelson, and probably the most unforgettable place to ride in New Zealand: huge sand flats with shallow, clear water, sandbars to jump at mid tide and channels in between, all against golden sand and park scenery. The sea breeze is a fairly consistent north to north-easterly of around 15–17 knots, so big kites and wings are the rule, with the occasional strong south-westerly down the valley; usually only four or five riders out. Golden Bay over the Takaka hill is a giant shallow bay with even more wind and spots to explore; Tahunanui in Nelson is the crowded town alternative.
