Penghu – Longmen Beach

The Penghu islands sit in the strait between Taiwan and mainland China, a permanent wind tunnel where the north-east monsoon regularly delivers more than 40 knots and sometimes 50 from September or October until May, the opposite of the tourist season. Midwinter is often too strong even for kiting, so the shoulder months of September to October and March to April are the sweet spot; Longmen Beach is the main launch, with waves that turn on above 30 knots and are best an hour after high tide. Foil lessons fill the lighter days; a spot for strong-wind riders who want it uncrowded.
