Viana do Castelo – Praia do Cabedelo
A long crescent of fine sand south of the river mouth in northern Portugal, where the summer north-westerly, squeezed by the hills behind, blows 20–30 knots side to side-onshore from the right on 80–90 % of days from late May to late September, light in the morning and filling in after a midday lull. The harbour moles 1.5 km upwind leave flat water in their lee, then a beach break of 0.5–1 m in summer, swell outside the mole and a rocky wave 600 m downwind; land is always to leeward, so drifting off is practically impossible. Suits all levels in summer, with 16–18 °C water that calls for a 4/3 wetsuit; winter brings south-westerlies of up to 40 knots and waves to 3 m for experienced riders.
