Bergen aan Zee

An open North Sea beach north of Alkmaar with a mix of chop and waves and a friendly local scene of freeriders, wave riders and freestylers. At low tide a channel forms behind the beach bank, deep and wide enough to ride and really flat, which the locals recommend for first metres on the board; the current decides the rest, since on southerly winds an outgoing tide helps you upwind and lets you ride on as little as 13 knots, while an incoming tide needs a few knots more. Quieter than the well-known Dutch spots, with seals for company; suits all levels once you know the tide.
