Behind the hotel zone in the south-east of the island a spit cuts off a lagoon of roughly 5 by 8 km, about 40 km² of standing-depth, glassy water with a soft, silty sand bottom and no reefs, reached by a 25–35 minute shuttle from the hotels. The wind is thermal and comes mostly side-onshore from the left at 3–5 Bft, best from mid-May to October and still on more than half the days in winter, when the air rarely drops below 20 °C. Not a strong-wind spot but one of the safest places anywhere to learn and to try new moves, with room for kilometre-long runs and a wide beach for launching in any direction.
