The big bay and wide beach of Isla Verde next to San Juan is Puerto Rico's best spot, with side-shore wind that suits every level, choppy water in winter and flat to small chop in summer. The island is nicknamed the Maui of the Caribbean for its mix of flat-water spots for freestyle and cruising and proper wave riding on the north coast, but its trade winds are less consistent than elsewhere in the Caribbean. Easy to reach from the United States, warm all year, with hotels on the beach and a capital whose nightlife is unmatched in the region.
