Diani – Galu Beach

A straight, reef-fringed beach 1.5 hours south of Mombasa with two seasons: the Kaskazi from mid-December to mid-March, side to side-onshore from the left, and the stronger, gustier Kusi from mid-June to mid-September from the right, both usually 12–20 knots and picking up around midday; the rains between them bring no wind. At low tide there is a huge standing area of flat water, at high tide light chop, and 900 m out on the reef a fast, close-set wave of up to 2.5 m in winter and 3.5 m in summer. Warm enough for lycra all year and often almost empty; the sandy Galu end is the one to launch from, since the north end near the Baobab hotel has coral blocks at the entry.
