Watamu – Garoda Beach
A 7 km bay north of Mombasa that runs from the Tiny Beach at Temple Point over Small Beach to Long Beach, with a sandy bottom and rounded rocks that show near the entry at low tide. The Kaskazi blows from mid-December to mid-March, side-shore from the left at 12–22 knots in 36 °C summer heat, the Kusi from mid-June to mid-September from the right, stronger but gustier; the wind sets in around midday, and April, May, October and November are rainy and windless. A standing area of about 200 m and a sandbank that dries at low tide make it easy to learn, while the reef 2 km out has waves to ride, up to 2 m in the Kusi season when higher water also shrinks the shallows; strong currents at certain tides make holding ground harder.
