El Cuyo

A small fishing village on the north coast of the Yucatán inside a large nature reserve, next to the pink lagoon of Las Coloradas and its flamingos. From February to June the wind blows from early morning into the night, very even at 15–22 knots, side-onshore from the north-east and often turning onshore in the afternoon, when a 30–50 cm chop builds; December to February brings a less reliable northerly and the odd rainy day. The lagoon behind the village is protected and off limits, so riding is on the open Gulf beach; 30 °C air and 24–26 °C water mean a shorty or lycra is enough, and whale sharks pass from May to September.
