Las Terrenas – Playa Portillo

A long, palm-lined beach at Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula, one of the prettiest setups in the Dominican Republic. Warm, flat water inside the reefs and a metre-high rolling wave outside them; the north-east trade wind, accelerated by the land, is as consistent as Cabarete's but not as strong, best from April to August and absent from October to December. Many sharp coral heads, so ride at higher tide and stay clear of them.
