Where the Neretva river reaches the coast at Ploče, its delta gives warm, shallow water, a sandy beach and a constant north-westerly wind looking across to the Pelješac peninsula. The local school runs from May to mid-September, and the flat, shallow water makes it an easy place to learn and to cruise. The delta itself is a bird reserve of orchards and water channels, famous for mandarins; a quiet alternative to the island spots.
