Trade winds sweep the island nearly every day, so there is always a beach facing the right way. Sotavento's shallow lagoon fills at high tide for flat-water sessions, while the open side of the same beach and the northern reefs deliver surf. Flag Beach in Corralejo is the usual place to learn (watch the rocks at low tide); Sotavento's gusty side-offshore wind is for confident riders.
