Kilometres of fine white sand on the Gulf of Suez two hours from Cairo, with a sandy bottom and no reef, both rare on the Red Sea. A 1 km sandbank upwind shelters the bay so the worst you get is a light wind chop, the water is crystal clear with about 100 m of standing depth, and the north-westerly comes in side-shore from the right without any wind shadow, light in the morning, full strength from midday to early evening and usually 1–3 Bft stronger than the forecasts say. Behind the spit lies a huge maze of standing-depth lagoons for advanced kiters, some of which dry out with the tide; several hotel-based schools work the bay.
