South Africa's warm-water city on the Indian Ocean. The north-easterly blows side-onshore most of the year, strongest from August to December, over average swells of around 4 ft, the place to go for waves; the kite beach has showers, a grass rigging area and car guards who help with launching. North of the city, La Mercy lagoon offers flat, shallow water and Umhlanga more waves.
