Safaga

A wide beach in front of the Shams hotels south of Hurghada, standing depth for 80–120 m depending on the tide, with pieces of coral underfoot, so shoes are a good idea. A morning wind falls off the mountains side-offshore from the left and turns side-shore around 11, boosted by afternoon thermals from March to November; flat water up to 5 Bft, chop and wind waves above that, and swell of up to 2.5 m further out on strong days. Good for all levels, with the uninhabited sand island of Tobia a few tacks upwind for glassy turquoise water (landing on it is not allowed).
