A 30 km sandy beach running north from Christchurch. The prevailing north-easterly sea breeze blows three or four days a week from October to March, onshore and steady; northerlies are side-shore, smooth and good for waves, and hot north-westerlies give gusty but excellent offshore wave riding. Kairaki at the Waimakariri river mouth also has flatter water; at New Brighton don't launch in front of the surf club in summer.
