Wellington – Lyall Bay & Eastbourne

New Zealand's windy capital, where about three quarters of the wind is northerly. Lyall Bay beside the airport faces Cook Strait and only works in southerlies, which bring powerful onshore surf and can arrive very fast with a front; you must call the control tower before launching. Eastbourne across the harbour is an open stony beach that works in northerlies, getting choppy with wind against tide.
