Foxton Beach

A west-coast beach town on the North Island where the Manawatū River meets the sea. The estuary is ideal for beginners in south-west to west winds, since a sandbank downwind catches anyone who cannot get back; the ocean beach has small to medium waves. Frontal winds, mostly north-westerly, are best from October to February; there is a bird sanctuary near the town end of the estuary.
