Auckland's wild west coast, a black-sand surf beach about 50 km long backed by dunes and forest. The waves are generally big and heavy, breaking 300–500 m out and re-forming inside, with some flat patches between. South to south-westerly winds are side-onshore; winter blows hard and gusty at around 20 knots, while summer sea breezes are only 10–14 knots. Stay out of the flagged swimming area from October to May.
