Punta San Carlos
A remote fishing point on the Pacific coast of Baja, 275 miles south of the border and reached only by dirt road, that windsurfers discovered in the early 1980s for its long, slowly peeling right-hand point breaks and reliable cross-offshore thermal. From March to October it blows over 20 knots on 20–25 days a month, 25–40 knots in spring and 25–35 in summer, easing to 18–25 from September to November; the ground swell brings 1–3 m waves, best in spring, with a gentler beach break for learning to ride waves and a rocky cliff spot with some of the best rights in the world for experts. Water is 13–16 °C in spring and around 20 in late summer, so bring a full wetsuit, booties for the low-tide rocks and a 4x4; desert wilderness with no nightlife.
