Oahu – Kailua

Kailua Bay on the green windward side of Oahu, the spiritual home of kiteboarding and of names like Naish and Cabrinha, is a white-sand, turquoise bay that regularly makes the world's-best-beaches lists. An offshore reef keeps the waves out, so the trade wind gives flat or choppy water with some wind swell through the summer, best in the morning and evening, and it suits every level. The bay fills with swimmers, sunbathers and kites and the beach shrinks at high tide, so launch and land quickly and ride away from the crowd; the big waves are on the North Shore.
