Key West
The chain of islands at the end of the Florida Keys is surrounded by ocean on every side and has some of the best flat-water riding in the United States, with shallow, warm water and consistent wind from autumn to spring. The main spot, Smathers Beach, has a small sandy setup area, gets crowded in season and is for intermediate and advanced riders, but its big shallow flat is ideal for practising new tricks; the Flats, reached by boat, take wind from every direction and have nothing but sand and turtle grass underfoot, which makes them the place to learn and to progress to unhooked tricks. Islamorada an hour south of Miami offers similar flat, 1–2 m deep water from October to March; between fronts in spring there are windless days.
