Miami's beaches fill with sunbathers and carry strict rules, so the riding happens a short drive away: Crandon Park on Key Biscayne is the most popular spot, a managed watersport concession that requires level-three certification, a helmet, registration and an entry fee, and rewards you with clear, flat to choppy waist-deep water and a huge area, butter flat at low tide and small waves a little offshore. Matheson Hammock Park and the Miami Flats are the other two local favourites. Warm water, city life and nightlife make it a solid winter kite holiday; the certification rule means it is not a place to learn.
