South Padre Island

The longest barrier island in the world, on the Gulf coast of Texas near the Mexican border, with flat water on the bay side and waves on the ocean side like a warm-water Cape Hatteras. March to July has the most windy days at around 16 knots, October to December stronger wind averaging 20 knots for the wave riders, and hot summer days may only allow light-wind sessions, so bring big kites. The South Flats close to town are ankle to waist-deep flat water for beginners and trick practice, the North Flats more of the same; access is over sand and the tide can catch parked cars. A family-friendly destination with plenty to do off the water.
