Drepano
A spit near the Rio bridge on the Gulf of Corinth where a venturi effect gives some of the steadiest, least gusty wind and the flattest water on the Greek mainland, on around 300 days a year, although often only for a one or two hour window. A westerly or easterly blows offshore over a sandbank that dries at low tide, leaving a butter-flat strip that gets choppier the further downwind you go; forecasts miss the local effect, and a west wind with 8–10 knots on the models can turn into 20–30 at the spot. Best chances in late spring, summer and early autumn; the flat area is small, so riders circle in and out, and the offshore wind makes it one for confident intermediate and advanced riders.
