Holbox

A car-free island off the north tip of the Yucatán, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean. The water is flat, shallow and sandy with no waves, an ideal place to learn; the north-easterly blows side-onshore from December to summer, and winter northers bring up to 30 knots every couple of weeks. A permit from a kite school or the town hall is needed; ride in the zones north and east of the Las Nubes hotel, or go on a trip to empty Cabo Catoche.
