Progreso – El Playón

Mérida's port on the Gulf of Mexico. At El Playón, 3–4 km west of the long cargo pier, the north-easterly trade wind and afternoon sea breeze blow 8–35 knots with very little shorebreak; the water is shallow for about 100 m and gets heavy chop above 20 knots. Winter northers bring 1.5–2 m waves; morning south-easterlies are offshore, so use the flat Ría de Chelem instead. Avoid the Malecón near the pier.
