A sandy barrier island in the Ria Formosa next to Faro airport. Riders choose between flat water in the lagoon behind the island and chop or, in winter, waves on the ocean side. A north-westerly thermal blows through the summer; in July and August the main beaches are closed to kites, so walk about a kilometre along the beach from the bridge.
