Vila Nova de Milfontes
A river-mouth spot on Portugal's wild Alentejo coast, with flat, sheltered water in the Rio Mira estuary and a beach break of 1–3 m swell a few hundred metres away, where the river meets the Atlantic. The summer Nortada blows steadily from the north-west onto the beach at 15–25 knots most afternoons from May to September, calm in the morning and filling in after midday. Schools run from both banks of the estuary, teaching beginners in the sheltered water and guiding advanced riders out to the waves.
