Barra Grande – Macapá
A river delta west of Jericoacoara in Piauí where a 3 m tidal range rebuilds the playground twice a day: around low tide the area between Macapá and Barra Grande, about 1 by 3 km, becomes countless small and large standing-depth lagoons of glassy water divided by sandbanks, and as the flood comes in the lagoons fill, channels open to the open sea with its 1–3 m swell and a shore break of up to a metre reaches the beach, with sandbank-sheltered patches remaining. The easterly trade wind blows side-onshore from the right at 25–35 knots almost daily from mid-July to mid-January, sometimes lighter in the morning and at full strength by midday. Pure sand everywhere, so no shoes; a mangrove forest that drains completely at low tide bounds the spot to the south.
