The Firth of Clyde coast half an hour from Glasgow, sheltered from ocean swell by Arran and Kintyre. Barassie at the south end of the 15 km Irvine Bay has huge sand flats from mid to low tide with shallow play areas behind the banks, while Troon South Beach ranges from chop to head-high waves. The prevailing south-westerly is best; stay clear of the area south of the Marine Hotel, under the airport's flight path.
