The westernmost East Frisian island has a big sandy surf beach that works in every wind direction: at high tide a shallow channel gives flat to choppy water, and waves break further out. Strong south-westerly and north-westerly depressions bring the best wind from autumn to spring; easterlies are gusty behind the town. Keep to the marked zones away from the summer crowds by the promenade; rescue is only on duty in summer.
