Germany's easternmost Baltic island, next to the Polish border. On the sea side, Ahlbeck's big sandy beach is shallow for about 100 m, with chop that grows into waves in strong wind, and Peenemünde in the north mixes flat pools with small waves; on the lagoon side, Kamminke on the Stettin Lagoon has a kilometre of flat, shallow water behind wooden groynes. Westerly depressions from autumn to spring; summer is lighter and the resort beaches are packed.
