A flat Atlantic island joined to the Vendée coast, with sandy beaches on both sides so there is flat or choppy water for most wind directions. La Guérinière has a beach set aside for water sports and a harbour that makes southerly days safe for beginners; Barbâtre further south is shallow and flat. Low-pressure winds make late spring and autumn the best seasons; summer is lighter.
